Maine Veterans Property Tax Exemption

Local Maine municipal tax assessor
$6,000 of property value exempt from tax

You can take $6,000 of value off the property tax assessment on your Maine home if you are 62 or older and served during a recognized wartime period or hold the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, or if the VA rates you 100 percent disabled or pays you at the 100 percent rate for individual unemployability.

Check eligibility

How to apply

Notify your local municipal tax assessor in writing and give them the proof of eligibility. Apply through the municipality where the property is, not the state. You only have to do this once, with your first application.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork showing a discharge other than dishonorable, proof of age or your VA rating documentation, and proof that you own the property.

Eligibility

  • You are a Maine resident
  • You received a discharge other than dishonorable
  • You are 62 or older and served during a recognized wartime period or received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, or you have a 100 percent disability rating from the VA or are paid at the 100 percent rate for individual unemployability
