Maryland Death Benefit for Survivors of Resident Service Members Killed in Action

Up to $125,000, plus a state flag

Maryland pays up to $125,000 to the beneficiaries of a resident service member killed in action, or who died as a direct result of a wound suffered in action, in Iraq or Afghanistan. The family is also awarded a state flag.

How to apply

Submit a claim and the required documents through the Maryland Survivor Benefits claim submission form; the document list is at the bottom of the form. For help, contact the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Office of the Secretary, at 410-585-3728.

What you'll need

The report of casualty or death certificate, documentation that the death was in action in Iraq or Afghanistan, proof of the service member’s Maryland residency, and proof of your relationship or your authority over the estate.

Eligibility

  • You are the surviving spouse, child or dependent parent of the service member, or you represent their estate
  • The service member was a Maryland resident
  • The service member was killed in action on or after January 1, 2006, in Afghanistan or its contiguous airspace, or in Iraq or its contiguous waters or airspace, or died as a direct result of a wound suffered in action there
