Maryland Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption

Complete exemption from real property tax on your house and surrounding yard

Your house and the yard around it are completely exempt from Maryland real property tax if you have a 100 percent total and permanent or unemployable service-connected disability rating. An unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran keeps the exemption.

Apply through your local Maryland Assessment Office, not the state, using the property tax exemption application for disabled veterans. Contact that office to confirm what it needs and when.

What you'll need

Your VA or branch of service documentation showing the 100 percent total and permanent or unemployability rating, proof you own the home and live in it, and a death certificate and marriage certificate if you are applying as a surviving spouse.

Eligibility

  • You own the home in Maryland and live in it
  • You have a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, a service-connected unemployability rating from the VA, a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from your branch of service, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who qualified
