Maryland Douglas J.J. Peters Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts Scholarship Program (VAIC)

Up to 50 percent of tuition, fees and room and board; maximum $8,699 on campus, $5,067 with parents, $5,637 off campus

You can get up to 50 percent of annual tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board at University System of Maryland schools if you served in Afghanistan or Iraq, or if you are the spouse or child of someone who did. Maximum awards are $8,699 living on campus, $5,067 living with parents and $5,637 living off campus. The award cannot be used at University of Maryland Global Campus or University of Maryland, Baltimore, and all awards depend on funds being available.

How to apply

Apply through the Maryland Higher Education Application webpage (MDCAPS). File your FAFSA by March 1. For help, email osfamail.mhec@maryland.gov or call 410-767-3300.

What you'll need

A FAFSA filed by March 1, proof of your family relationship to the service member or veteran such as a marriage or birth certificate, documentation of available VA education benefits, and a copy of military orders or a DD214 showing duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Eligibility

  • You are a Maryland resident, or a nonresident active duty service member or dependent who was stationed in Maryland before deployment
  • You are accepted or enrolled in an undergraduate program or an approved two-year certificate program, full time at 12 or more credits a semester or part time at 6 to 11 credits
  • You are a veteran or an active or reserve component service member who served at least 60 days on active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq, or you are the spouse or child of one
  • The qualifying service was in Afghanistan or its contiguous airspace on or after October 24, 2001, or in Iraq or its contiguous waters or airspace on or after March 19, 2003
