Maryland Vessel Excise Tax Exemption for Nonresident Service Members

Exemption from the 5 percent vessel excise tax for one year

You pay no Maryland vessel excise tax, normally 5 percent, for one year on a boat you bring into Maryland when you move here on a permanent change of station. The boat has to stay registered in another state.

Claim the exemption with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources when you bring the boat into Maryland, through a DNR licensing and registration service center.

What you'll need

Your permanent change of station orders, your military ID, and the boat’s out-of-state registration.

Eligibility

  • You are a nonresident service member on active duty stationed in Maryland
  • Your boat is registered in another state
  • You brought the boat to Maryland on a permanent change of station
