Massachusetts Clause 22 Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans, Purple Heart Recipients and Gold Star Parents

$400 off your property tax

You get $400 taken off the property tax on the home you live in if you have a VA service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more, received the Purple Heart, are the Gold Star parent of a deceased service member, or are the spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who qualifies.

How to apply

Apply to the assessor in the Massachusetts city or town where the property is. You have to apply again every year.

What you'll need

Your discharge paperwork, your VA rating letter or Purple Heart citation, proof you occupy the home as your domicile, and proof of your Massachusetts residency.

Eligibility

  • You occupy the property as your domicile on July 1 of the year you apply
  • You lived in Massachusetts for at least six months before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, or you have lived in Massachusetts for the two consecutive years immediately before filing, or you are the spouse of an eligible veteran
  • You have a VA service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more, you received the Purple Heart, you are the Gold Star parent of a deceased service member, or you are the spouse or unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who qualifies
