Massachusetts Clause 22A Property Tax Exemption for Loss of a Limb or Eye, Top Decorations and Prisoners of War

$750 off your property tax

You get $750 taken off the property tax on the home you live in if you have a service-connected loss of use of one foot, one hand or one eye, received the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross or the Air Force Cross, or were a prisoner of war. The spouse or surviving spouse of a veteran who qualifies can claim it too.

How to apply

Apply to the assessor in the Massachusetts city or town where the property is. You have to apply again every year.

What you'll need

Your discharge paperwork, your VA documentation of the loss of use or your award citation or prisoner of war documentation, proof you occupy the home as your domicile, and proof of your Massachusetts residency.

Eligibility

  • You occupy the property as your domicile on July 1 of the year you apply
  • You lived in Massachusetts for at least six months before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, or you have lived in Massachusetts for the two consecutive years immediately before filing, or you are the spouse of an eligible veteran
  • You have a service-connected loss of use of one foot, one hand or one eye, you received the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross or Air Force Cross, you were a prisoner of war, or you are the spouse or surviving spouse of a veteran who qualifies
