Massachusetts Driver License Renewal Grace Period After Discharge

60 days to renew an expired licence, and 45 days of driving on a U.S. Armed Forces licence

You get 60 days to renew an expired Massachusetts driver’s licence after you return home from active duty. If you hold a licence issued by the U.S. Armed Forces in another country you can drive in Massachusetts for up to 45 days.

There is nothing to apply for. Renew your licence at a Registry of Motor Vehicles location within 60 days of returning, and carry your discharge paperwork in the meantime.

Your discharge paperwork showing your release date, and your expired Massachusetts licence.

Eligibility

  • You are a Massachusetts resident
  • You returned to Massachusetts after being discharged from active duty
  • Your Massachusetts driver’s licence expired while you were serving
