Massachusetts Gold Star Family License Plate

Free Gold Star Family plate

Immediate family members of a service member who died while serving on active duty get a free Gold Star Family license plate. Eligible relatives are the spouse, parents, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren. Stepparents, stepchildren, stepsiblings, step-grandparents and step-grandchildren qualify only if they were legally adopted before the service member died.

How to apply

Bring the completed Application for Gold Star Family Plates and the documentation it lists to a full-service Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles location, or mail it to Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, ATTN: Special Plates, P.O. Box 55889, Boston, MA 02205-5889.

What you'll need

The completed application, the report of casualty or death certificate, and proof of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild of a service member who died while serving on active duty
  • If you are a step-relative, you were legally adopted before the service member died
