You can deduct unreimbursed overnight travel, meals and lodging from your Massachusetts taxable income if you serve in the National Guard or the Reserves and have to travel more than 100 miles from home to your place of duty.

What you'll need

Your drill or duty orders showing the location, and receipts for the travel, meals and lodging you paid for yourself.

Eligibility

  • You are a Massachusetts resident filing a Massachusetts income tax return
  • You serve in the National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves
  • You travel more than 100 miles from your home to your place of duty
  • You paid for the travel, meals or lodging yourself and were not reimbursed
