Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans, Former Prisoners of War and Service Members

Local Massachusetts city or town assessor
Excise tax waived on one vehicle

One vehicle you own for personal, non-commercial use is exempt from Massachusetts motor vehicle excise tax if you have a qualifying service-connected disability, were a prisoner of war, or are a resident service member deployed or stationed outside Massachusetts for at least 180 continuous days in a calendar year. A service member wounded or killed in an armed conflict does not have to meet the 180-day test, and an unremarried surviving spouse of a former prisoner of war can claim it with local approval.

How to apply

Contact the assessor in the Massachusetts city or town where you live. The exemption is granted locally, not by a state office.

What you'll need

Your VA rating letter or documentation of the loss of use or visual impairment, your Massachusetts Disabled Veteran license plate approval if you have one, prisoner of war documentation, or your orders showing the deployment or assignment outside Massachusetts.

Eligibility

  • You are a Massachusetts resident
  • You own the vehicle for personal, non-commercial use
  • You have a service-connected loss of or loss of use of one or both feet or arms or a permanent visual impairment in at least one eye, or you have a permanent service-connected disability or approval for a Massachusetts Disabled Veteran license plate, or you are a former prisoner of war or their unremarried surviving spouse, or you are a resident service member who was deployed or stationed outside Massachusetts for at least 180 continuous days in a calendar year
