Massachusetts Property Tax Exemption for Veterans, Spouses, Surviving Spouses and Gold Star Parents

Local Massachusetts city or town assessor
$400 up to a full property tax exemption, depending on the clause you qualify under

Massachusetts cities and towns take a set amount off the property tax on the home you live in if you are a veteran with a qualifying disability or decoration, or the spouse, surviving spouse or Gold Star parent of one. Eight separate clauses of the statute set the amount, ranging from $400 to a full exemption. You can only receive one exemption in a fiscal year, and if you qualify under more than one clause you get the one worth the most.

How to apply

Apply through the assessor in the Massachusetts city or town where the property is, not through a state office. You have to apply again every year.

What you'll need

Eligibility

  • You occupy the property as your domicile on July 1 of the year you apply
  • You lived in Massachusetts for at least six months before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, or you have lived in Massachusetts for the two consecutive years immediately before filing, or you are the spouse of an eligible veteran
  • The veteran you claim through received a discharge other than dishonorable, or died while serving on active duty
  • You qualify under one of the exemption clauses of Chapter 59, Section 5
