Massachusetts Public Housing Gross Income Exemption for Veterans

Local Massachusetts housing authorities, overseen by the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities
Education money, and disability retirement pay above $1,800 with an unemployability rating, excluded from gross income

Money you receive to pay for tuition, fees and books is left out of your gross income when a Massachusetts housing authority works out whether you qualify for state-aided public housing. If you have an individual unemployability rating from the VA, military disability retirement pay above $1,800 is also excluded.

How to apply

There is nothing separate to apply for. When you apply for state-aided public housing, tell the housing authority which of your income is education money or excluded disability retirement pay.

What you'll need

Your VA education benefit or tuition award paperwork, and your VA rating letter showing individual unemployability if you are excluding disability retirement pay.

Eligibility

  • You are a veteran applying for or living in Massachusetts state-aided public housing
  • You receive money for tuition, fees and books, or you have an individual unemployability rating from the VA and receive military disability retirement pay of more than $1,800
