Up to four years of military service credit toward state retirement

You can buy up to four years of military service credit toward your Massachusetts state retirement. Active duty converts one year for one year. Reserve component service converts at five years of reserve service for one year of Massachusetts retirement credit.

How to apply

Submit the Massachusetts Veteran’s Creditable Service Purchase (Buyback) Form to the State Retirement Board. For questions call 617-367-7770, 800-392-6014 or 413-730-6135.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing your service dates and an honorable discharge, plus your campaign badge citation or evidence of a Purple Heart or service-connected discharge if you are qualifying on that basis.

Eligibility

  • You are a member of the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System
  • You received an honorable discharge
  • You served at least 180 days of active duty outside a wartime period, or at least 90 days of active duty with one day during wartime, or you were awarded the Second Nicaraguan Campaign, Navy Occupation Service, Medal of Humane Action, Yangtze Service or Army of the Occupation badge, or you served during wartime and received the Purple Heart or were discharged because of a service-connected disability regardless of length of service
