Massachusetts State Employment Veteran's Tenure

Protection from involuntary separation for lack of work or funds

Once you have worked more than three years in a Massachusetts state non-civil service position, you cannot be involuntarily separated for lack of work or lack of money while similar positions still exist. If those similar positions are also held by veterans, separations happen in reverse order of original hiring date.

There is nothing to apply for. If your job is threatened, tell your agency’s human resources office that you are claiming veteran tenure under the state statute.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge documentation and your state employment start date.

Eligibility

  • You are a veteran
  • You are employed in a Massachusetts state non-civil service position
  • You have held the position for more than three years
