Massachusetts Temporary Driver License for Service Members and Families Outside the State

Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV)
Temporary licence valid up to 60 days after your licence expires

If you are temporarily out of Massachusetts and cannot get home before your driver’s licence expires, the Registry can issue a temporary licence good for up to 60 days past the expiry date. It can only be granted once, and not if your licence is in a non-renew status.

Contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles Driver Licensing Department and request a temporary licence, explaining that you are temporarily out of state.

What you'll need

Your military orders and your expiring Massachusetts driver’s licence details.

Eligibility

  • You are an active duty service member, or the spouse or dependent of one
  • You are temporarily outside Massachusetts and cannot return before your licence expires
  • Your Massachusetts driver’s licence is not in a non-renew status
