Massachusetts Vehicle Sales Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans and Purple Heart Recipients

Sales tax waived on one vehicle

You pay no Massachusetts sales tax on one vehicle for personal, non-commercial use if you lost, or permanently lost the use of, both legs, both arms, or one leg and one arm, or if you have been approved for a Massachusetts Disabled Veteran license plate. Purple Heart recipients also qualify if they have been approved for a Disabled Veteran or Purple Heart plate and have at least a 60 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA.

Contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles through its online contact page before you buy, and claim the exemption when you register the vehicle.

What you'll need

Your VA rating letter, your approval for a Massachusetts Disabled Veteran or Purple Heart license plate, and the purchase paperwork for the vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are a Massachusetts resident
  • You use the vehicle for personal, non-commercial purposes
  • You lost or permanently lost the use of both legs, both arms, or one leg and one arm, you have been approved for a Massachusetts Disabled Veteran license plate, or you received the Purple Heart and have both a plate approval and a service-connected disability rating of 60 percent or more
