MassHousing Home for the Brave Mortgage Program

Up to 97 percent financing with MI Plus payment protection and closing cost assistance

You can buy a home with a low down payment through MassHousing’s Home for the Brave program: up to 97 percent financing on single-family homes and condominiums, and 95 percent on two, three and four family homes. Every loan includes MI Plus, which covers principal and interest payments for up to six months if you lose your job or are deployed, and closing cost assistance is available through MassHousing grants. Income and loan limits apply.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or current orders, or casualty documentation if you are a surviving spouse; your credit and income documentation; two months of reserves if you are buying a two, three or four family property; and a homebuyer counseling certificate if you are a first-time buyer or buying a multi-family property.

Eligibility

  • You are a veteran, an active duty service member, or the surviving spouse of a service member killed while serving on active duty
  • You are buying a primary residence and will not own more than one home when the loan closes
  • You have good credit, total housing debt under 41 percent and total monthly debt under 45 percent
  • You meet the MassHousing income and loan limits
  • If you are a first-time buyer or buying a multi-family property, you complete a homebuyer counseling course
  • If you are buying a two, three or four family property, you have two months of reserves
