Michigan Commercial Driver License Military Testing Waivers

Michigan waives both the CDL knowledge skills test and the on-road driving skills test if your military training and experience covered the class of commercial vehicle you are applying for.

How to apply

Submit your completed application, including certification by your commanding officer, at any Michigan Secretary of State branch office. Select "Schedule a Visit" to make an appointment.

What you'll need

Your completed application with your commanding officer’s certification, and documentation that you were trained and employed in the past year operating a military vehicle equivalent to the commercial vehicle class you want.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for a Michigan commercial driver license
  • You were trained and employed within the past year in a position authorizing you to operate a military vehicle equivalent to the commercial vehicle class you are applying for
  • You have two years of driving experience
  • You have not held more than one license, other than a military license, in the past two years
  • You have not had a license suspended, revoked or cancelled in the past two years
  • You have no convictions for the disqualifying offenses or more than one conviction for the serious traffic violations listed on the application, and no conviction for a military, state or local traffic violation arising from an accident, and no record of an at-fault accident
