What you'll need

A surviving spouse also needs the veteran’s death certificate and proof they have not remarried.

Eligibility

  • You own the home and occupy it as your primary residence
  • You or the veteran you claim through received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You have a total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, you received VA financial assistance to buy, build or modify a home to accommodate your disability, or the VA rates you as individually unemployable
  • You are the veteran, or the unremarried surviving spouse of the veteran and a Michigan resident
