Immediate family members of a service member who died in combat can get the Michigan Gold Star Family license plate. Eligible family are the surviving spouse, biological parents, stepparents and foster parents, siblings and half siblings, and children and stepchildren.

How to apply

Submit the Michigan Application for Gold Star Family License Plates (SOS-446), which is a different form from the general veteran plate application, at any Michigan Secretary of State branch office or by mail to Michigan Department of State, Internal Services Section, 7064 Crowner Dr, Lansing, MI 48918.

What you'll need

Casualty documentation or a death certificate showing the service member died in combat, and documentation of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are registering a passenger car, pickup truck, van or motor home in Michigan
  • You are the surviving spouse, biological parent, stepparent, foster parent, sibling, half sibling, child or stepchild of a service member who died in combat
