Full exemption from Michigan individual income tax on SBP, RCSBP and RSFPP annuities

Survivor annuities paid to the surviving spouse of a retired service member are exempt from Michigan individual income tax. This covers the Survivor Benefit Plan, the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan and the Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan.

There is nothing to apply for. Leave the annuity payments out of the income you report on your Michigan return.

Eligibility

  • You are a Michigan resident filing a Michigan individual income tax return
  • You are the surviving spouse of a retired service member
  • You receive a Survivor Benefit Plan, Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan or Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan annuity
