Michigan adds points to your score when you apply for a state civil service job. Where a numerical score or written civil service examination is used, 5 points are added for a veteran or surviving spouse and 10 points for a disabled veteran, the spouse of a veteran with a 50% or greater service-connected rating, a surviving spouse with a child under 18, or a surviving spouse with continuing parental care of a disabled child. Where no examination score is used, 5% or 10% of the highest possible score is added to your screening score instead. If a mechanical or random screening is used to cut the applicant pool, you are kept and placed in the final candidate pool.
Register on the Michigan Civil Service Commission veterans preference registration webpage before you apply. For questions call 800-788-1766 or email mcsc-appassessmentteam1@michigan.gov.
