Emergency grant for a temporary financial hardship

You can get an emergency grant to get through a short-term financial crisis. Grants cover an unforeseen situation that has caused a temporary hardship, and are only authorized when the expense can actually be resolved and you can show you will be able to meet your future expenses.

Apply through the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund county committee serving the county you live in, not the state office. For help call 800-642-4838.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable discharge and qualifying service, proof of Michigan residency, and documentation of the emergency expense and your income.

Eligibility

  • You received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You are a Michigan resident, or you were a Michigan resident immediately before entering the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You served 180 days of active duty during a period of war, or served less than 180 days of wartime service and were discharged because of a service-connected disability, or served 180 days of active duty and were awarded an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, or you are a peacetime veteran aged 65 or older
  • You have an unforeseen, temporary financial emergency that a grant can resolve
  • You can show you are able to meet your future expenses
