Military Spouse Provisional Admission to Practice Law in Virginia

Practise law in Virginia without taking the Virginia bar exam

If you are licensed to practise law in another state and you are a military spouse, you can practise in Virginia without sitting the Virginia bar exam, working under the supervision of a licensed Virginia attorney. Rule 1A:8 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia sets out the full requirements.

What you'll need

Proof of your law licence in another state, your marriage certificate, your spouse’s orders showing a Virginia duty station, and confirmation of the Virginia attorney who will supervise you.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse of a service member
  • You are licensed to practise law in another state
  • You practise under the supervision of a licensed Virginia attorney
  • You meet the requirements of Rule 1A:8 of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia
