Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services Fee Exemptions for Disabled Veterans

Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS)
All driver’s license, ID card and endorsement fees waived

With a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating or an individual unemployability rating, Minnesota waives all fees for any type of driver’s license or ID card and all fees for license endorsements. Vehicle registration fees, title fees and sales tax are covered by a separate exemption.

How to apply

Apply at a Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services office and show your proof of eligibility. For questions call DVS at 651-201-7777.

What you'll need

One of the following: your annual VA benefits letter showing total disability for individual unemployability, your electronic annual award letter, your VA decision letter, your Department of Defense issued military ID card, or a patient inquiry printout from a VA medical center.

Eligibility

  • You have a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or an individual unemployability rating
  • You are applying for a Minnesota driver’s license, ID card or license endorsement
