Minnesota Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Do Not Expire for Active Duty Service Members and their Family

Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS)
License or ID renewal deferred for your whole period of active duty service

If your Minnesota driver’s license or ID card was valid and unexpired when you entered active duty, you do not have to renew it until after you separate from the U.S. Armed Forces, however long you serve. The same applies to a spouse and dependents stationed with you. You have to send a written request for an extension letter to keep the license or ID valid, and each family member has to request separately.

How to apply

Send a written request with your name, driver’s license or ID number, and the mailing address for the letter, plus a document showing the start date of your service. Submit it online, in person at any Minnesota driver exam station or driver’s license application office, or by mail to Driver and Vehicle Services, 445 Minnesota Street, Suite 175, St. Paul, MN 55101.

What you'll need

A written request with your name, license or ID number and mailing address, plus a document showing the month, day and year your service started: military orders, a letter from your commanding officer or other military authority, or another official document showing the start date of deployment or service. Spouses and dependents have to be listed on the documents, with name change documents if needed.

  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, or you are the spouse or dependent stationed with a service member
  • You send a written request with a document showing your service start date
