Minnesota National Guard Tuition Reimbursement Program (STR) Survivor Entitlement

Up to $18,000 per fiscal year undergraduate and $28,000 graduate, with a 144 semester credit lifetime cap

If a Minnesota National Guard member was killed in the line of duty while serving on state active duty, their surviving family can be reimbursed up to 100 percent of tuition at an accredited school, for associate, bachelor’s, master’s and professional degrees and certificate programs. Undergraduate reimbursement is up to 100 percent of the University of Minnesota resident undergraduate rate with a cap of $18,000 per fiscal year, running 1 July to 30 June, and graduate reimbursement is up to 75 percent of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities graduate rate with a cap of $28,000 per fiscal year. The lifetime maximum is 144 semester credits, and you stay eligible even if you move out of Minnesota.

What you'll need

The service member’s casualty documentation and line of duty determination, proof of your relationship to them, and your school enrollment and tuition documents.

Eligibility

  • You are the surviving spouse, or a dependent child who has not yet turned 24, of a Minnesota National Guard service member
  • The service member was killed in the line of duty while serving on state active duty
