Minnesota SOAR, Homeless Veterans Assistance Program

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA), with the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Social Security Administration
Free help applying for SSI and SSDI

A trained MDVA SOAR advocate helps you apply for Social Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness and have a mental illness, medical impairment or substance use disorder. They help you collect your personal and medical records, complete the forms, file a comprehensive application packet with the Social Security Administration, and get through the determination process. All of it is free.

How to apply

Contact the nearest County Veterans Service Officer, or call 888-LinkVet (888-546-5838). Anyone can refer a veteran using the online SOAR referral intake form.

What you'll need

Your personal and medical records; your SOAR advocate helps you collect whatever the Social Security Administration needs.

Eligibility

  • You are a Minnesota veteran
  • You are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness
  • You have a mental illness, medical impairment or substance use disorder
  • You may be eligible for Social Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance
