Minnesota Special Military and Veteran Vehicle License Plates

24 distinctive plate designs, several issued free of charge

Minnesota offers 24 distinctive license plate designs honoring service members, veterans, retired service members and eligible family members. They can be displayed on any passenger class vehicle, one-ton pickup or self-propelled recreational vehicle you own or jointly own, and can be ordered with a disability symbol if you qualify for a disability license plate.

How to apply

Apply at any Minnesota deputy registrar office, or mail the Application for Special Plates with your documentation and fees to Driver and Vehicle Services, 445 Minnesota Street, Suite 164, St. Paul, MN 55101. For questions call Driver and Vehicle Services at 651-201-7777 or 651-297-3166.

What you'll need

A copy of your separation papers (DD214) showing a discharge under honorable conditions if you are a veteran, or a copy of your military ID plus official documentation verifying eligibility for the specific plate if you are currently serving.

Eligibility

  • You qualify for one of the 24 Minnesota special military or veteran license plates
  • You own or jointly own a passenger class vehicle, one-ton pickup or self-propelled recreational vehicle
