Under the Minnesota Veterans Preference Act you get credit added to your rating on a competitive open examination for most Minnesota public employment positions. A non-disabled veteran gets 10 points and a veteran with a permanent service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or more gets 15 points. A disabled veteran also gets a five point credit on their first promotional examination. You have to pass the examination without the credit points before they are added. The preference is also open to the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran, and to the spouse of a disabled veteran who cannot qualify for the position because of that disability.
Claim the preference when you apply for the position and give the hiring agency your supporting documents. Many covered positions are with counties, cities and school districts rather than the state, so apply to that employer directly.
Your DD214, plus your VA rating documentation, marriage certificate or death certificate depending on which preference you are claiming.
