Minnesota Subsistence Assistance for Veterans and Surviving Spouses

Local County or Tribal Veterans Service Officer, with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs
Temporary payments for rent or mortgage, utilities, health insurance premiums and personal needs

You can get temporary financial help if a disabling medical condition stops you working in your normal occupation for at least 30 days. It covers shelter payments such as rent or mortgage, utility assistance, health insurance premiums, and cash for personal needs. Eligibility is based on your income and assets.

Contact the nearest County Veterans Service Officer, call 888-LinkVet (888-546-5838), or email FO.MDVA@state.mn.us.

What you'll need

Your DD214, proof of Minnesota residency, medical documentation of the disabling condition, documentation of your income and assets, and the bills you need help with.

Eligibility

  • You are a Minnesota resident
  • You are a veteran who meets the Minnesota definition of a veteran, or the unremarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran
  • You are unable to work in your normal occupation for at least 30 days because of a disabling medical condition
  • You meet the program’s income and asset limits
