Minnesota Surviving Spouse and Dependent Education Benefit

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA)
Free tuition to the end of a bachelor’s degree, plus $750 per fiscal year for fees, books, supplies and room and board

You can study tuition-free at a Minnesota public postsecondary institution up to the completion of a bachelor’s degree if your spouse or parent died on active duty or as a result of a service-connected condition. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs also pays $750 per fiscal year toward fees, books and supplies, and room and board.

Apply online through the MDVA Programs and Services Document and Application Portal. A Higher Education Veterans Program regional coordinator can help.

What you'll need

The veteran’s DD214, the death certificate or casualty documentation, VA documentation linking the death to service if it was not on active duty, and proof of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are the unremarried surviving spouse, or the child, adopted child or stepchild, of a service member or veteran
  • Your spouse or parent died while serving on active duty, or as a result of a service-connected condition
  • You are enrolled at a Minnesota public postsecondary institution
  • You have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree
