Four preference points, or eight for disabled veterans, plus retention preference in a layoff

The Mississippi State Personnel Board adds four preference points to your score for an initial or promotional state appointment, or eight points if you are a disabled veteran. During a layoff, veterans and disabled veterans are kept ahead of non-veteran employees.

Claim the preference when you apply for a state job through the Mississippi state employment job opportunities webpage, and submit your supporting documents.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing qualifying wartime service and an honorable discharge, and your VA rating letter or Purple Heart documentation if you are claiming the eight-point preference.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for Mississippi state employment or a promotional appointment
  • You served on active duty for at least 90 days during a period of war or armed conflict and received an honorable discharge, you served less than 90 days and were discharged because of a service-connected injury, you have a service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or more from the VA, or you received the Purple Heart
