Missouri gives you preference when hiring for state employment. When an examination is used to build the list of eligible applicants, preference goes to honorably discharged veterans, surviving spouses of veterans, disabled veterans, and spouses of disabled veterans.

Claim the preference when you apply for a Missouri state position and submit your supporting documents with the application.

What you'll need

Your DD214, plus your VA disability documentation, marriage certificate or the veteran's death certificate depending on which preference you are claiming.

  • You are applying for Missouri state employment
  • You are an honorably discharged veteran, a disabled veteran, the surviving spouse of a veteran, or the spouse of a disabled veteran
  • An examination is used to establish the list of eligible applicants for the position
