Free Montana Conservation License for Reserve Component Service Members

Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks
Free conservation, Class A fishing or Class AAA combination sports license for five years

Being ordered to federal active duty for a contingency operation for at least two months outside Montana earns you a free resident wildlife conservation license, Class A resident fishing license, or Class AAA resident combination sports license for five years. The Class A-6 black bear tag is not included, and you still pay the resident base hunting license fee and buy the resident aquatic invasive species prevention pass.

Apply at any Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regional office, at department headquarters in Helena, or by mail. For questions call 406-444-2535 or email fwpgen@mt.gov.

What you'll need

Proof of Montana residency and your DD214 verifying your release or discharge from active duty service.

Eligibility

  • You are a Montana resident service member in the Montana National Guard or the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves
  • You were ordered to federal active duty in support of a contingency operation for at least two months outside Montana
  • You are applying in the license year you returned from active duty, the year after, or one of the next four years
