Montana Disabled Veteran Assistance Program (MDV) Property Tax Reduction

Montana Department of Revenue, through its local field offices
Property tax rate reduced by 100, 80, 70 or 50 percent depending on income and filing status

You can have the property tax rate on your home cut by 100, 80, 70 or 50 percent, depending on your income and filing status. For a home on agricultural or forest land the reduction covers the house and a one-acre home site. An unremarried surviving spouse can claim it too, and the income ranges are updated each year for inflation.

How to apply

File the MDV Property Tax Relief Application online, or send the paper application with the documents it lists to your nearest Montana Department of Revenue field office. Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by April 15; a late application is considered the following year.

What you'll need

A VA Benefit Summary Letter verifying your 100 percent service-connected rating, proof that you own and occupy the home, and your federal adjusted gross income for the year. A surviving spouse provides the veteran’s rating or casualty documentation and proof of the death.

Eligibility

  • You own your home or are under contract to purchase it
  • You live in the home as your primary residence for at least seven months of the year
  • You have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who died while serving on active duty, who had a 100 percent rating or was paid at the 100 percent rate at the time of death, or who died as a result of a service-connected disability
  • Your federal adjusted gross income, excluding capital gains or losses, is no more than $62,598 if you file single, $72,229 if you are married or head of household, or $54,573 if you are an unremarried surviving spouse
