Full exemption from Montana income tax on qualifying active duty pay

You can leave your active duty military pay out of your Montana taxable income. This covers base pay, special pay and incentive pay for active duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces, and pay for National Guard and Reserve members serving on state or federal active duty orders.

There is nothing to apply for. Leave the exempt pay out of the income you report on your Montana return, and attach verification of your military status, such as a copy of your orders, when you file.

Eligibility

  • You file a Montana income tax return
  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, or you are a National Guard or Reserve member serving on state or federal active duty orders
