Montana Income Tax Subtraction for Military Survivor Annuities

50 percent of your survivor annuity subtracted from Montana taxable income

You can subtract 50 percent of your military survivor annuity from Montana taxable income. This covers Survivor Benefit Plan, Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan and Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan annuities, lasts five consecutive years, and is scheduled to expire in tax year 2033.

Your Form 1099-R showing the annuity payments.

Eligibility

  • You are a Montana resident filing a Montana income tax return
  • You receive a Survivor Benefit Plan, Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan or Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan annuity
  • You became a Montana resident after June 30, 2023, or you were a Montana resident before you began receiving the annuity
