Montana Veterans’ Employment Preference for Public Employment

Montana public employers, under the state veterans’ preference rules
5 or 10 percentage points added in scored hiring, plus preference in unscored hiring and in a reduction in force

Applying for public employment in Montana earns you preference. In a scored hiring process, 5 percentage points of the total possible points are added if you are a veteran and 10 if you are a disabled veteran or an eligible relative. When the process is not scored, the employer must prefer a disabled veteran, then an eligible relative, then a veteran, over an equally qualified applicant with no preference. Preference also protects you in a reduction in force, where the employer must keep you over other employees with similar duties, qualifications and the same length of service.
