Domiciliary, intermediate and skilled nursing care at four state homes

Nebraska runs four veterans homes offering domiciliary care, intermediate care and skilled nursing care to veterans and their eligible family members: Central Nebraska Veterans' Home in Kearney with 225 beds, Norfolk Veterans' Home with 159 beds, Eastern Nebraska Veterans' Home in Bellevue with 120 beds plus a 30-bed memory support unit, and Western Nebraska Veterans' Home in Scottsbluff with 109 beds. Services include physical, occupational, speech and restorative nursing therapies, hospice and palliative care, and memory support care units.

How to apply

Apply directly to the home you want, through the county veterans service office where you live, or through a recognized Nebraska veterans organization: the American Legion, AMVETS, DAV, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, or Vietnam Veterans of America.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge, proof you have lived in Nebraska for at least two years, your financial information, and a marriage certificate or the service member's casualty documentation if you are applying as a spouse, surviving spouse or Gold Star parent.

Eligibility

  • You are unable to earn a livelihood
  • You depend completely or partly on public charities, or the care you need is available only at a state institution
  • You are a veteran who served on active duty other than for training with an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge and have lived in Nebraska for at least two years, or you are the spouse of such a veteran, married at least two years and aged 50 or older, or you are the surviving spouse or parent of a service member who died on active duty or from a service-connected disability, aged 50 or older and a Nebraska resident for at least two years
