New Jersey Military Spouse Educator Licensing Benefit

Temporary instructional certificate valid 180 days, extendable another 180 days, plus expedited review and an initial application fee waiver

You can get a temporary New Jersey instructional certificate to teach while you finish the remaining requirements for a full certificate, if your active duty spouse has been reassigned to New Jersey. The temporary certificate is good for 180 days and can be extended for another 180 days. New Jersey also reviews military spouse certification applications on an expedited basis and waives the fee for an initial application.

How to apply

Apply through the New Jersey Department of Education certification system and identify yourself as a military spouse. For help, email the Department of Education Military Liaison at military@doe.nj.gov.

What you'll need

Your valid teaching license or certificate from another state, evidence of your teaching competency for the State Board of Examiners, your spouse’s reassignment orders, and your marriage certificate.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse of an active duty service member who has been reassigned to New Jersey
  • You hold a valid teaching license or certificate from another state that meets New Jersey instructional certification requirements
  • You can demonstrate teaching competency as determined by the State Board of Examiners
