New Jersey Vehicle Registration Refunds for Active Duty Service Members

Refund of registration fees for the remainder of the registration period

You can get a refund for the unused part of your New Jersey vehicle registration if you enter or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and re-register the vehicle at an out-of-state duty location.

How to apply

Write a letter stating why you are requesting the refund and include proof of service, complete the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission refund application, and return the original registration and your New Jersey licence plates with a copy of your military orders and a copy of the out-of-state registration. Forms are also available at MVC agencies or by calling 609-292-6500.

Your letter of request, proof of service, your military orders, the original New Jersey registration, your New Jersey licence plates, and a copy of the out-of-state registration. Full instructions are on page two of the application.

Eligibility

  • You are a New Jersey resident who has entered or is serving in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You have a valid New Jersey vehicle registration
  • You have re-registered the vehicle at your out-of-state duty location
  • You return the original registration and your New Jersey licence plates
