You can take $250 a year off the property tax bill on your primary residence as an honorably discharged veteran who served on active duty. If you and your spouse or domestic partner are both veterans, each of you can claim the deduction. A surviving spouse, civil union partner or domestic partner who has not remarried or formed a new partnership is also eligible.
Apply through your local municipal tax assessor or tax collector, not the state. File the completed claim form with the documentation listed on it.
Your DD214 or other proof of active duty service and honorable discharge, proof you are a New Jersey legal resident, and proof you own and live in the home. A surviving spouse also needs proof the veteran died while serving on active duty, proof the veteran was a New Jersey resident at the time of death, and proof they have not remarried or formed a new civil union or domestic partnership.
