$6,000 exemption per eligible veteran on your New Jersey income tax return

You can claim a $6,000 exemption on your New Jersey income tax return as a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. It is on top of any other exemption you can claim, and it is available on both the resident and the nonresident return. Your spouse or civil union partner can also claim the $6,000 exemption on a joint return if they are an eligible veteran.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other proof of an honorable discharge or release under honorable circumstances from active duty.

Eligibility

  • You are filing a New Jersey income tax return
  • You are a veteran who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces on or before the last day of the tax year, or you are the spouse or civil union partner of such a veteran and you are filing a joint return
