New Mexico Reduced Vehicle Registration Fees for Veterans With Insufficient Property

If you qualify for the veterans property tax exemption but do not own enough real or personal property to use all of it, you can pay two-thirds of the normal registration fee on vehicles you own.

How to apply

Get your veterans exemption certificate from the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services first, then present it at a New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division office when you register your vehicle.

What you'll need

Your NMDVS certificate of eligibility for the veterans property tax exemption, and evidence that you did not have enough property to use the full exemption.

Eligibility

  • You are a New Mexico resident
  • You qualify for the New Mexico Veterans Property Tax Exemption
  • You do not have enough real or personal property to claim the full property tax exemption
