New Mexico Special Benefit Assessment Exemption for 100 Percent Disabled Veterans

New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services (NMDVS), with the exemption applied to your bill by your county assessor
Full exemption from special benefit assessments on your property

With a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, your property is exempt from any special benefit assessments, the extra charges local improvement districts levy on top of ordinary property tax. The exemption passes to an unremarried surviving spouse when the veteran dies.

How to apply

Send a completed NMDVS application and the documents listed on it by email to vet.benefits@state.nm.us, or by mail or in person to the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, 407 Galisteo Street Rm 134, Santa Fe NM 87501-2641. Ask NMDVS and your county assessor to confirm the exemption is applied to any special assessment districts your property sits in.

What you'll need

Your DD214, VA documentation of a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating, and, if you are a surviving spouse, proof of your marriage and the veteran’s death.

Eligibility

  • You are a New Mexico resident
  • You have a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA
  • You are the veteran or the unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran
