New Mexico Veterans Property Tax Exemption

New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services (NMDVS), with the exemption applied to your bill by your county assessor
$10,000 reduction in taxable property value, adjusted annually for inflation

You can take $10,000 off the taxable value of your real property for county tax purposes. The amount is adjusted for inflation each year. An unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran can claim the same exemption.

How to apply

Send a completed NMDVS application and the documents listed on it by email to vet.benefits@state.nm.us, or by mail or in person to the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, 407 Galisteo Street Rm 134, Santa Fe NM 87501-2641. For help, call 866-433-8387. Once NMDVS certifies you, the exemption is applied by your county assessor.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable discharge and your service dates, proof of New Mexico residency, and, if you are a surviving spouse, proof of your marriage and the veteran’s death.

Eligibility

  • You are a New Mexico resident
  • You received an honorable discharge after at least 90 days of continuous active duty other than for training, or you served less than 90 days and were discharged because of a service-connected disability
  • You are the veteran or the unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran
