New York Public Employee Leave of Absence to Continue Study

Your New York public employer
Leave of absence of up to four years to study, with reinstatement rights

New York public officers and employees who served in the U.S. Armed Forces on or after January 31, 1955 can take a leave of absence of up to four years to continue their education or take a refresher or retraining course.

How to apply

Request the leave through your public employer’s human resources office before you start your course, and apply for reinstatement within 60 days after your course of study ends.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork showing service on or after January 31, 1955, and your course enrollment details.

Eligibility

  • You are a New York public officer or employee
  • You served in the U.S. Armed Forces on or after January 31, 1955
  • You are taking a course of study, a refresher course or a retraining course
