New York State Civil Service Veterans Hiring Preference

New York State Department of Civil Service
Five points on open-competitive and two and a half on promotion examinations, or 10 and five points for disabled veterans

You get extra credits added to your passing score on competitive civil service examinations. Non-disabled veterans get five points on open-competitive examinations and two and a half points on promotion examinations. Disabled veterans get 10 points on open-competitive examinations and five points on promotion examinations.

How to apply

Claim the preference when you apply for a New York State civil service examination through the Department of Civil Service, and submit your discharge paperwork and, for the disabled veterans preference, your VA disability documentation.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork, plus your VA Benefit Summary Letter showing a 10 percent or higher service-connected rating and current compensation if you are claiming the disabled veterans preference.

Eligibility

  • You are a New York resident veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, other than for training purposes
  • You received an honorable discharge, or will be honorably discharged at the time of appointment
  • If you are claiming the disabled veterans preference, you have a service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more and receive compensation from the VA
